Overview

 

Duplex stainless steel is a high-end product among stainless steel products. Its strength and corrosion resistance far exceed those of ordinary stainless steel, and its products are mainly used in industries such as energy, chemical, petrochemical, freshwater manufacturing, pulp and paper making, and chemical shipping.


Dual phase steel pipe fittings belong to a type of stainless steel pipe fittings, which are made of dual phase steel materials, so they are called dual phase steel pipe fittings. They include: dual phase steel elbows, dual phase steel tees, dual phase steel crosses, dual phase steel reducers, dual phase steel caps, etc. According to the connection method, they can be divided into four categories: socket type dual phase steel pipe fittings, threaded dual phase steel pipe fittings, flanged dual phase steel pipe fittings, and welded dual phase steel pipe fittings. Dual phase steel elbows are used where pipe fittings turn; Flanges are used to connect pipes to each other, connecting them to the pipe ends, and dual phase steel tee pipes are used where the three pipes converge; Dual phase steel cross pipes are used where four pipes converge; Dual phase steel reducing pipes are used where two pipes with different pipe diameters are connected. Advantages of Duplex Steel:

 

  • High strength:

The strength of duplex stainless steels is approximately twice that of conventional austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. Therefore, designers can reduce the thickness of thin walls in certain applications. The following figure compares the yield strength of several duplex stainless steels and 316L austenitic stainless steels in the temperature range from room temperature to 300 ℃.

  • Good toughness and ductility:

Despite their high strength, duplex stainless steels exhibit good plasticity and toughness. The toughness and ductility of duplex stainless steel are significantly superior to those of ferritic stainless steel and carbon steel, maintaining good toughness even at very low temperatures such as - 40 ℃/F. However, it does not reach the level of excellence of austenitic stainless steel.

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel mainly depends on its chemical composition. In most application environments, duplex stainless steels exhibit high corrosion resistance due to their high chromium content, which is advantageous in oxidizing acids, and contains sufficient amounts of molybdenum and nickel to withstand corrosion in moderately reducing acid media.
The ability of duplex stainless steel to resist chloride ion pitting and crevice corrosion depends on its chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and nitrogen content. The relatively high content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in duplex stainless steels gives them excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. 
Duplex stainless steel have excellent stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance, which is inherited from the ferrite side. All duplex stainless steels have significantly better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking than 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Stainless steel pipes may undergo stress corrosion cracking in the presence of chloride ions, humid air, and elevated temperatures. Therefore, in many applications in the chemical industry where there is a high risk of stress corrosion, duplex stainless steel is often used instead of austenitic stainless steel.

  • Physical properties

Between austenitic stainless steel and ferritic stainless steel, but closer to ferritic stainless steel and carbon steel.

  • Cost advantage

Compared to austenitic stainless steel pipe grades with the same corrosion resistance, duplex stainless steel has lower nickel and molybdenum content. Due to the low content of alloying elements, duplex stainless steel may have an advantage in price, especially when alloy surcharges are high. In addition, due to the high yield strength of duplex stainless steels, their cross-sectional dimensions can often be reduced. Compared to the scheme using austenitic stainless steel, using duplex stainless steel can significantly reduce cost and weight.
