321 Stainless Steel: Frequently Asked Questions

321 stainless steel is a titanium-stabilized austenitic grade and the natural choice wherever heat and corrosion meet. Below we answer the questions engineers, buyers and fabricators ask most about grade 321.

1. What is 321 stainless steel?

321 (UNS S32100) is an austenitic stainless steel based on the classic 18/8 formula — about 18% chromium and 8% nickel — stabilised with titanium. The titanium (typically around 0.5%) binds carbon into stable TiC particles, preventing chromium carbide from precipitating at the grain boundaries. That is why 321 resists intergranular corrosion far better than 304 after welding or exposure to the 425–850°C sensitising range. In short, it is the titanium-stabilised twin of 304 — similar day to day, stronger under heat.

It appears under several standards: ASTM/AISI 321 (UNS S32100), EN 1.4541, JIS SUS 321 and GB 06Cr18Ni11Ti.

2. What is the chemical composition?

Element Typical Range (wt%)
C (Carbon) ≤ 0.08
Si (Silicon) ≤ 0.75
Mn (Manganese) ≤ 2.00
P (Phosphorus) ≤ 0.045
S (Sulfur) ≤ 0.030
Cr (Chromium) 17.00 – 19.00
Ni (Nickel) 9.00 – 12.00
N (Nitrogen) ≤ 0.10
Ti (Titanium) ≥ 5 × C, ≤ 0.70

Titanium is tied to carbon deliberately: it must be at least five times the carbon content to stabilise the steel fully. The chromium and nickel ranges stay close to 304, so most properties are comparable.

3. How does 321 compare with 304, 316, 310S and 347?

Grade Chemistry Highlight Relative Advantage Typical Use
304 (18Cr-8Ni) Baseline austenitic Balanced, low cost, good ambient corrosion resistance Food vessels, daily goods, architectural trim
316(L) (18Cr-11Ni-2.5Mo) Molybdenum added Superior chloride/sea-spray corrosion resistance, weaker at high temperature Marine gear, chemical piping, medical devices
321 (18Cr-10Ni-Ti) Titanium-stabilised Resists intergranular corrosion after welding; good high-temperature strength and creep resistance Aerospace exhaust, engine gaskets, boiler tubing
310S (25Cr-20Ni) High Cr/Ni for extreme heat Oxidation resistant above 1000°C; ambient performance like 304 Furnace tubes, combustion chambers, heating elements
347 (18Cr-10Ni-Nb) Niobium-stabilised Similar to 321; excellent welded and high-temperature performance, suited to nuclear service Aerospace parts, chemical equipment, reactor components

The choice comes down to temperature and chemistry: below 400°C use 304; where chlorides dominate use 316; between 500°C and 850°C — especially for welded parts that cannot be annealed — 321 is the economical, reliable answer. Only above roughly 900°C do you move up to 310S or a nickel alloy.

4. Where is 321 stainless steel used?

  • Aerospace: exhaust manifolds, jet nozzles, combustion liners, bellows joints.
  • Chemical & petrochemical: reactor liners, heat-exchanger tubes, steam lines, flue ducts.
  • Energy: boiler superheater tubes, high-temperature pressure vessels, diesel silencers.
  • Automotive: exhaust manifolds, turbocharger piping, flexible bellows.
  • Heat treatment & food/pharma: furnace trays and baffles up to ~750°C; mixing blades and steriliser baffles.

5. How should 321 stainless steel be welded?

321 behaves much like 304: TIG, MIG, arc and electrode welding all work, and no pre-heat or post-weld annealing is normally needed. The one subtlety is filler choice — titanium oxidises and burns off in the arc, so a matching 321 filler may not stabilise the weld pool. Classic practice is to run a 347 (niobium-stabilised) filler on 321 base metal; where 347 is unavailable, 316L or 308L gives a serviceable joint with slightly lower performance.

6. What is its maximum service temperature?

321 performs best from 500°C to 850°C. Its practical continuous ceiling is about 925°C, with roughly 900°C under intermittent heating. At 600°C its sustained tensile strength reaches about 145 MPa — some 22% above 304 — and its creep-rupture life can exceed 304 threefold. Above 900°C, step up to 310S or a higher alloy.

7. How can I verify genuine 321 stainless steel?

  • Mill certificate & stencil: Check the test certificate (e.g. ASTM A240) and confirm the heat-number stencil matches.
  • XRF / OES: The most reliable method. Handheld XRF reveals Cr, Ni and crucially Ti in seconds — no titanium means it is not 321.
  • Chemical test liquid: Exposes 200- or 400-series substitutes but cannot separate 304 from 321.
  • Magnet: Both 304 and 321 are essentially non-magnetic, so a magnet only rules out ferritic 430-type steel.

8. What product forms and standards are available?

321 is stocked as hot- and cold-rolled plate and coil (ASTM A240 / EN 10088), seamless and welded pipe (ASTM A312), bar (ASTM A276/A479) and matching welding wire (AWS A5.9 ER321/ER347). A higher-carbon 321H (C 0.04–0.10%) serves greater high-temperature strength needs.
