904L Stainless Steel vs 2205 Duplex Steel: Frequently Asked Questions

Author: Zhejiang Yuhong Weiye Special Steel Co., Ltd. (Yuhong Group) — 浙江宇鸿伟业特钢有限公司 | steelseamlesspipe.com

904L stainless steel and 2205 duplex stainless steel are both high-corrosion-resistance industrial materials, common in chemical, marine and water-treatment service. This FAQ answers the most common questions buyers ask when choosing between them.

Q1. What are 904L and 2205 duplex steel?

904L is a low-carbon, high-nickel, high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel that also contains copper. Its mainly austenitic structure offers good plasticity and toughness and performs well in sulfuric, phosphoric and organic acid media. 2205 duplex steel combines austenite and ferrite in a balanced proportion, giving it high strength, good toughness and strong resistance to chloride corrosion.

Q2. How do the chemical compositions differ and affect performance?

904L has a much higher nickel content than 2205 duplex and contains copper. The high nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure, while copper improves corrosion resistance in some reducing acid media. 2205 duplex has lower nickel, but the balance of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen gives it excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking. For seawater, salt spray and chloride-bearing wastewater, 2205 is often a stronger fit. Remember that alloy content does not equal final corrosion resistance: media, temperature, flow rate, welding and surface condition all matter.

Q3. How large is the strength difference?

Under common solution-annealed conditions, 904L typically has a yield strength above 220 MPa, while 2205 duplex can usually exceed 450 MPa — close to twice that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel. This directly affects structural design: for pressure equipment, storage tanks, offshore structures, heat exchanger parts and piping, 2205 may allow reduced wall thickness and structural weight. However, thinning cannot be converted simply by the strength ratio; corrosion allowance, weld joint factor, fatigue and stiffness must also be considered.

Q4. Which is better for acid corrosion resistance?

For some sulfuric acid and reducing acid environments, 904L is usually more targeted. Its high-nickel, high-molybdenum, copper-containing system improves stability in certain acid media. If your equipment handles acid storage tanks, pickling systems, chemical reactors or corrosive process liquid transfer, 904L often deserves priority evaluation. 2205 duplex also has good corrosion resistance, but its main advantage is not all acidic environments; in some high-temperature, high-concentration or strongly reducing acid media, its applicability may be limited. Define the acid type, concentration, temperature, impurities and operating mode before deciding.

Q5. How do machining, forming and welding differ?

904L has good plasticity and elongation, suitable for bending, rolling, stamping and complex forming. But its toughness causes continuous chips, built-up edge and work hardening, so turning and drilling need sharp tools and sufficient cooling. 2205 duplex can also be bent, rolled and machined, but its higher strength demands greater forming force and shows more springback. For welding, 904L's austenitic structure is relatively adaptable but needs matched filler and post-weld surface treatment; 2205 duplex requires stricter control of heat input, interpass temperature and cooling rate to avoid an imbalanced austenite/ferrite ratio in the weld and heat-affected zone.

Q6. How does the temperature range differ?

Neither 904L nor 2205 duplex is a dedicated heat-resistant steel. 2205 duplex may undergo structural changes and embrittlement at sustained high temperature, so it is generally not suitable for long-term high-temperature service. 904L has a somewhat wider high-temperature range, but its core advantage remains corrosion resistance, not high-temperature oxidation resistance or creep strength. For long-term high-temperature service, consider dedicated heat-resistant materials such as 310S instead.

Q7. How should I choose between 904L and 2205 duplex?

  • If the working conditions are mainly sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, pickling liquid or some reducing acids, evaluate 904L first.
  • If the main risk is seawater, salt spray, chloride-bearing wastewater or chloride stress corrosion, evaluate 2205 duplex first.
  • If the equipment needs higher load capacity, reduced wall thickness or controlled structural weight, 2205 duplex usually has the advantage.
  • If parts need complex stamping, deep forming or large plastic deformation, 904L generally offers better formability.
  • If the project is cost-sensitive, 2205 duplex's lower nickel and higher strength may offer better overall cost performance.

Q8. What should I confirm before purchasing?

Clearly define product form, execution standard, delivery condition, dimensional tolerance and surface requirements. For corrosive media, also provide the medium name, concentration, temperature, pressure, chloride content, flow rate and design life. For 2205 duplex, pay special attention to the solution-annealed condition and duplex microstructure control; for 904L, verify key elements such as nickel, molybdenum and copper, plus the material certificate.

Conclusion

904L and 2205 duplex have no absolute superiority. 904L suits some acidic media and applications needing good formability, while 2205 duplex excels in high strength, chloride environments and stress corrosion resistance. Base your selection on corrosion type, temperature, load, processing method and overall cost rather than grade or price alone.
