Piping vs Piping System: What Is the Difference?

In industrial engineering, the terms piping, piping system, and piping components are often used interchangeably, yet they describe different things. Understanding the distinction is essential for engineers, procurement teams, and anyone specifying pressure-containing fluid-transport equipment for process plants.

1. What Is Piping?

Piping includes pipe, flanges, fittings, bolting, gaskets, valves, and the pressure-containing portions of other piping components. It also includes pipe hangers and supports, together with other items necessary to prevent over-pressurization and over-stressing of the pressure-containing components.

It is evident that pipe is only one element or a part of piping. Therefore, pipe sections, when joined with fittings, valves and other mechanical equipment and properly supported by hangers and supports, are called piping. In short, an isolated length of pipe is not yet piping — it becomes piping once assembled and supported as a functional whole.

2. What Is a Piping System?

A piping system is a set of interconnected piping subject to the same sets of design conditions. In other words, once several piping elements are connected so that they share a common design pressure, temperature and service, they form a single piping system.

3. What Are Piping Components?

Piping components are mechanical elements suitable for joining or assembly into a pressure-tight, fluid-containing piping system. They are the building blocks from which piping and piping systems are constructed.

Category Typical Examples
Pipe & tube Seamless pipe, welded pipe, tubing
Fittings Elbows, reducers, tees, flanges
Fasteners & sealing Gaskets, bolts, studs
Valves Gate, globe, check, ball valves
Supports Hangers, shoes, guides, anchors
Special items Expansion joints, strainers
4. Key Design Activities for Piping
  • Pipe material selection — matching metallurgy to the fluid, pressure and temperature.
  • Pipe sizing calculation — determining the correct bore to control velocity and pressure drop.
  • Pipe thickness selection — selecting wall thickness to safely contain the design pressure with corrosion allowance.
5. Special Considerations for Piping

Buried (underground) piping. When pipes are routed underground, several points must be kept in mind:

  • Minimum pipe size to be routed under ground shall be not less than 1 inch.
  • Avoid flange joints in underground (U/G) piping.
  • Keep in mind that if a pipe leaks underground it is difficult to detect, so avoid U/G routing of pipe carrying hazardous fluid.
  • Pipe shall be laid below the frost zone in areas where ambient temperature drops below freezing.
  • Buried piping should be properly protected from corrosion — with wrapping and coating, or by using cathodic protection.

Freeze protection of outdoor piping. Where ambient temperature falls below freezing, the liquid content of a pipe may freeze while the plant is under shutdown. In such cases pipes are wrapped with heat-tracing elements to maintain content temperature above freezing (around 4 °C) even when the ambient temperature is below freezing.

  • Electric heat tracing: an electric coil is wrapped around the pipe and switches on as ambient temperature drops; pipes are then insulated over the coils.
  • Steam tracing: steam tubes are wound around the main pipe to provide heat and insulation.
Conclusion

To summarise: pipe is a single component, piping is an assembled and supported collection of components, and a piping system is a group of interconnected piping sharing the same design conditions. Piping components are the individual mechanical elements used to build them all. Clear terminology leads to clearer specifications, safer designs and more accurate procurement.
