The gap is too large or too small will produce a "dead zone", which is not conducive to heat transfer and often increases fluid resistance.
The spacing of the baffle also has an important effect on the flow of the shell. The distance is too large to ensure the vertical flow of fluid through the tube bundle, so that the heat transfer coefficient of the outer surface of the tube decreases. The spacing is too small, not easy to manufacture and repair, and the resistance loss is also large. Generally, the baffle spacing is 0.2 to 1.0 times of the inner diameter of the shell.
