Welding and Fabrication

Welding Monel 400 is a bit challenging because the material tends to form brittle structures when improperly handled. The key challenges include:

  • Avoiding stress corrosion cracking: Monel 400 is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the presence of certain conditions, especially if exposed to elevated temperatures and a corrosive environment.
  • Welding filler material: It's critical to use the correct welding filler material (often Monel 60 or Monel 400 filler) to maintain the integrity of the alloy's properties. Preheating may be necessary in some cases.
  • Post-weld heat treatment: In some cases, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be required to relieve internal stresses and ensure the welded joint is strong and resistant to cracking.
