ASTM A105/ASME SA105 standard specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, test methods, and labeling requirements for carbon steel forgings used in pipeline components such as flanges, fittings, valve bodies, etc. A105 material belongs to ordinary carbon steel, and the manufacturing process is forging. It mainly uses processes such as hammering, extrusion, or rolling to cause plastic deformation of the metal billet in the hot state, refine the grain size, and improve the density, strength, and toughness of the material.


ASTM A105 carbon steel flanges are suitable for a temperature range of -29 ° C to 425 ° C. At temperatures exceeding 425 ℃ or higher, the strength of A105 carbon steel flanges will significantly decrease, exacerbating creep and stress relaxation, increasing graphitization tendency, and increasing long-term use risk. In higher working environments, alloy steel materials need to be selected.


Below 0 °C, the toughness of the material will decrease. If it needs to be applied to low-temperature environments such as -46 ° C, it is usually necessary to use materials that have been verified by notch impact testing. ASTM A105N is more suitable than A105, and "N" represents meeting the low-temperature impact requirements.



What is the difference between Carbon Steel ASTM A105 and A105N?


There is no difference in chemical composition between A105 and A105N in ASTM A105/ASME SA105 standards, but the standard stipulates that when there are auxiliary requirements for heat treatment in the order, letters will be added after A105 to distinguish them: A-annealing, N-normalizing, NT normalizing plus tempering, QT quenching plus tempering.
