HIC Testing and the "HIC D" Grade​​, Second-Stage Vacuum Condenser

 
​​HIC​​ stands for ​​Hydrogen Induced Cracking​​. It is a standardized laboratory corrosion test designed to evaluate the resistance of steel to internal cracking caused by hydrogen atoms penetrating the metal in a wet H₂S-containing acidic environment. The test is typically performed according to international standards such as ​​NACE TM0284​​ or ​​ISO 15156​​.
The "D" means the material must pass the most stringent assessment. The standard acceptance criteria for a "D" grade are typically as follows (exact values are subject to the project specification):

•​​Crack Length Ratio (CLR) ≤ 5%​​

•​​Crack Thickness Ratio (CTR) ≤ 1.5%​​

•​​Crack Sensitivity Ratio (CSR) ≤ 0.5%​​

In some extremely severe service conditions, the specification may require all three indices to be ​​0%​​, meaning no detectable cracking is permitted.
