CARBON STEEL FLANGE A694 GR F42 F46 F48 WNRTJ B16.5 CLASS1500
An ASTM A694 F42 flange is a high-strength forged steel flange used in high-pressure pipeline systems, particularly in the oil and gas industry. The "F42" designation means it has a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (approximately 290 MPa).
It is specifically designed to match the strength of API 5L X42 grade pipe, ensuring that the flange is not weaker than the pipe itself — a critical safety requirement in high-pressure transmission lines.
A694 F42 is not a low-temperature material. It is intended for normal to elevated temperature service. If your application involves low temperatures (below -20°F / -29°C), you should consider ASTM A350 LF2 or other low-temperature carbon steel materials instead.
Here is the comparison between ASTM A105andASTM A694 F42 flange materials
Quick Comparison Table
| Aspect | ASTM A105 (General Carbon Steel Flange) | ASTM A694 F42 (High-Strength Pipeline Flange) |
| Primary Application | General-purpose carbon steel flange for ordinary industrial piping under normal temperature and pressure. | Specifically designed for high-pressure, long-distance transmission pipelines. Strength is matched to API 5L X42 grade pipes. |
| Minimum Yield Strength | Approx.250 MPa (36 ksi) | Approx.290 MPa (42 ksi)– hence the "F42" designation |
| Minimum Tensile Strength | Approx.485 MPa (70 ksi) | Approx.415 MPa (60 ksi) |
| Carbon (C) Content | Max0.35% | Max0.30% |
| Manganese (Mn) Content | Range0.60% – 1.05% | Max1.60% |
| Phosphorus (P) / Sulfur (S) | Max0.035%/0.040% | Max0.025%/0.025%(stricter purity control) |
| Common Pressure Ratings | Typically Class 150 to Class 2500, but most common in lower classes | Class 150 through Class 2500, often used in higher ratings |
| Typical Service | Water, oil, gas, steam in refineries, chemical plants, and general industry | High-pressure oil & gas transmission pipelines |
