ASTM A928 CL.1 UNS S32205 S32750 Duplex Stainless Steel Welded Pipes

ASTM A928 Class 1 Duplex Steel Welded Pipe refers to a specific type of welded pipe made from duplex stainless steel, designed to meet the requirements set out in the ASTM A928 standard. This pipe is intended for high-pressure and high-temperature applications and is especially suited for industries that require a combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.

Key Characteristics of ASTM A928 Class 1 Duplex Steel Welded Pipe:

  1. Duplex Stainless Steel Material:

    • The term "duplex" refers to a dual-phase steel that has both austenitic and ferritic microstructures. The combination of these two structures gives duplex steel a unique blend of properties.

    • Duplex steels typically contain 20-30% chromium, 4-6% nickel, and 2-5% molybdenum, which enhances their resistance to corrosion, particularly in environments prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting.

  2. Class 1 (Grade 1):

    • Class 1 indicates a specific grade within the ASTM A928 standard, which specifies mechanical properties and material requirements.

    • Class 1 duplex stainless steel provides higher strength compared to regular austenitic stainless steels and is resistant to localized corrosion, such as pitting or crevice corrosion.

  3. Welded Construction:

    • The pipe is produced by welding duplex stainless steel sheets or plates together to form a continuous pipe. This is different from seamless pipes, which are made from a single billet of steel.

    • Welded pipes are often more cost-effective than seamless pipes, but they still retain the strength and corrosion resistance required for demanding applications.

  4. Pressure & Temperature Resistance:

    • Duplex steel welded pipes are designed to withstand high-pressure and high-temperature environments. This makes them suitable for industries like petrochemical, oil & gas, and power generation, where pipes need to carry fluids or gases under extreme conditions.

Applications:

  1. Oil and Gas Industry:

    • Duplex steel welded pipes are used extensively in offshore platforms, refineries, and pipelines due to their resistance to corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments such as seawater and brine.

    • They are used for transporting crude oil, natural gas, and refined products in harsh offshore and subsea environments.

  2. Petrochemical and Chemical Processing:

    • The excellent corrosion resistance and strength of duplex stainless steel make these pipes ideal for use in chemical reactors, pumps, and high-pressure vessels where corrosive chemicals are involved.

    • They are also resistant to stress corrosion cracking, which is crucial in chemical processing industries.

  3. Power Generation:

    • Duplex steel pipes are used in high-pressure steam systems and gas turbines where they need to endure both high temperatures and the potential for corrosive environments.

  4. Marine Applications:

    • Due to their superior resistance to seawater corrosion, duplex stainless steel welded pipes are commonly used in marine and offshore applications such as desalination plants, water treatment systems, and marine pipelines.

  5. Pulp and Paper Industry:

    • These pipes are also used in the pulp and paper industry, where aggressive chemical environments are present, and strength and resistance to corrosion are crucial for longevity and reliability.

Advantages of Duplex Steel Welded Pipes:

  1. Corrosion Resistance:

    • The dual-phase structure of duplex stainless steel provides excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride-rich environments like seawater.

  2. High Strength:

    • Duplex steel has superior strength compared to regular austenitic steels, making it ideal for high-pressure applications. It also has better fatigue resistance.

  3. Cost-Effective:

    • While duplex stainless steel is more expensive than carbon steel, it is more cost-effective than other high-alloy stainless steels, making it a more affordable option for highly corrosive applications.

  4. Weldability:

    • Duplex stainless steel can be welded using common welding processes. However, proper welding techniques are necessary to preserve the material’s corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

  5. Improved Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance:

    • Duplex steel is particularly resistant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and is favored in high-stress, high-corrosion environments, such as those in marine and chemical applications.

Common Grades of Duplex Steel:

  • 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel: One of the most commonly used grades of duplex steel, which offers a balanced combination of strength and corrosion resistance.

  • 2507 Duplex Stainless Steel: A higher-grade duplex steel that offers even better resistance to corrosion and is used in more aggressive environments.

Standard: ASTM/ASME A/SA789, A/SA790, A/SA928, DIN17456/17458, EN10216-5. After negotiation, we can supply pipe with customer's special requirement.
