304 stainless steel is the most widely used and versatile stainless steel, offering a greater variety of product types, shapes, and surface treatments than any other stainless steel. It possesses excellent formability and weldability. The balanced austenitic structure of 304 stainless steel allows for deep drawing without intermediate annealing.
 
Among the grades, 304H has the highest carbon content, 304L the lowest, and 304 stainless steel falls in between. Higher carbon content generally results in lower corrosion resistance. Different carbon contents also lead to different prices. However, in practical applications, different uses have different requirements.
 
304L is a low-carbon version of 304 that does not require post-weld annealing, making it widely used for thicker components. The higher carbon content of 304H is suitable for high-temperature environments. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even at low temperatures.
