ASTM A269 / ASME SA269 TP316L Polished Austenitic Stainless Steel Welded Tube
ASTM A269 specifies the requirements for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel 304/ 304L/ 316L/ ... / 317/ 321/ 347 tubing intended for general corrosive service, which commonly used in piping and plumbing applications. The tube is polished internally and/or externally using abrasive belts or brushes to achieve the required surface finish (e.g., 180G, 240G, 320G).
Tube Manufacturing & Process:
Welded Construction: The tube is formed from a flat strip (skelp) and then welded along its length using processes like TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or Laser Welding. The weld bead is typically rolled and annealed to be nearly indistinguishable from the parent metal, both in appearance and corrosion resistance.
Polished Finish: Surface is mechanically polished (e.g., #4 brushed, mirror, or electropolished) to improve:
Hygiene: Reduces bacterial adhesion (critical for food, pharma, and medical applications).
Aesthetics: Smooth, reflective appearance.
Corrosion Resistance: Minimizes surface defects that could trap contaminants.
Surface Finish (Polish)
The polish level is critical and is usually specified by the user. It is measured in terms of grit (e.g., 180G) or by Roughness Average (Ra) in microinches (µin) or micrometers (µm).
Grit Finish | Typical Ra Value | Application |
---|---|---|
#4 / 180G | < 0.8 µm / 32 µin | General sanitary applications, architectural |
#4L / 240G | < 0.5 µm / 20 µin | Dairy, food processing, brewing |
#7 / 320G | < 0.4 µm / 15 µin | Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, high-purity |
#8 Mirror | < 0.3 µm / 10 µin | Semiconductor, ultra-high purity (UHP) |

Differences from Similar Tubing
vs. ASTM A213 TP316L: A213 covers seamless tubing primarily for boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger applications (high-temperature pressure service). A269 is for "general service," which includes pressure but also focuses heavily on corrosion resistance.
vs. ASTM A249 TP316L: A249 covers welded tubing for boiler, condenser, and heat-exchanger service. It has more stringent requirements on weld integrity and testing for high-pressure applications compared to A269.
vs. 304/304L: 316L has better overall corrosion resistance, especially to pitting, due to its Molybdenum content. 304L is a more economical choice for less aggressive environments.
Applications
Pharmaceutical & Biotech: Process lines, fermenters, autoclaves, water-for-injection (WFI) systems.
Food & Beverage: Transfer lines for milk, beer, juice, food ingredients, and CIP systems.
Semiconductor: High-purity gas and chemical delivery lines.
Chemical Processing: Instrumentation lines, sample lines, and process connections in corrosive environments.
Medical: Components for medical devices and equipment.
Hydraulic & Pneumatic Lines: For specialized systems requiring corrosion resistance.
