ASME SA516 Gr.60 Carbon Steel + ASME SB127 UNS N04400/Monel 400 Explosion Bonded Clad Plate
ASTM B127 Monel 400 + ASTM A516 Gr.60 Explosive Clad Plate is a two-layer metallurgically bonded composite material used in pressure vessel construction, consisting of:
Cladding layer (corrosion-resistant): ASTM B127 – Monel 400 (a nickel‑copper alloy, UNS N04400)
Base/backing layer (structural): ASTM A516 Grade 60 – carbon steel plate for moderate‑temperature pressure vessel service
The two layers are permanently joined by explosive cladding (explosion welding), which creates a high‑strength, wavy metallurgical bond without melting the interface.
When this clad plate is fabricated into a pressure vessel (e.g., a tank, reactor, or column), the Monel 400 side faces the corrosive process fluid, while the carbon steel provides the mechanical strength to withstand internal pressure.
Common Cladding Material Combinations (Structural Base + Corrosion-Resistant Cladding)
| Base Material | Cladding Material | Key Properties | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel (e.g., SA516 Gr.60/70) |
Stainless Steel 316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603) |
Moderate corrosion resistance (acids, chlorides), cost-effective. | Chemical tanks, food processing, marine components. |
| Carbon Steel (SA516 Gr.60/70) |
Monel 400 (UNS N04400) |
Superior seawater/acid resistance, non-magnetic, high strength. | Offshore platforms, seawater heat exchangers, HF acid reactors. |
| Carbon Steel (SA285 Gr.C) |
Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) |
Extreme corrosion/oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength (>1000°C). | Flue gas desulfurization (FGD), aerospace, nuclear. |
| Carbon Steel (SA516 Gr.60/70) |
Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) |
Resists pitting/crevice corrosion in chlorides, acids, and sour gas. | Chemical reactors, pollution control, pharmaceutical. |
| Stainless Steel 304L | Titanium Gr.2 (UNS R50400) |
Excellent for chlorides, seawater, oxidizing acids; lightweight. | Desalination plants, chlorine processing, heat exchangers. |
| Carbon Steel | Nickel 200/201 (UNS N02200/N02201) |
Resists caustics, high thermal/electrical conductivity. | Caustic evaporators, alkali processing, electronics. |
| Stainless Steel 316L | Tantalum (UNS R05200) |
Unmatched corrosion resistance (acids except HF), biocompatible. | HCl reactors, medical implants, semiconductor equipment. |
| Carbon Steel | Copper-Nickel 90/10 (UNS C70600) |
Marine biofouling resistance, erosion/corrosion protection. | Ship hulls, condensers, seawater piping. |
Purpose of using cladding materials
Choose cladding to save cost – use expensive Monel only on the corrosive surface, with cheap carbon steel providing strength. It also avoids brittle intermetallic phases, allows thick vessel walls, and is fully ASME code‑approved.
Applications
Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) Alkylation Units (oil refineries) – the most common use.
Seawater Heat Exchangers & Desalination vessels (where higher strength than Monel alone is needed).
Caustic Evaporators (NaOH service).
Sulfuric Acid Mixers (reducing acid environments).
Sour Gas (H₂S) service with salt water – but verify NACE requirements (Monel 400 is not always recommended for very sour oilfield brines).
