DIN 86033 Slip On Flange , CuNi10Fe1.6Mn / C70600 / CuNi 90/10 Copper Nickel Alloy Flanges

 

 

DIN 86033 is standard of slip on flange, specifically designed for copper-nickel alloys. It is not the same as DIN EN 1092-1 (for steel). The bolt circle, hub dimensions, and facing are optimized for CuNi alloys to prevent stress corrosion cracking and ensure proper gasket sealing at lower strength levels. Slip-On Type (Type 02): The flange slips over the pipe end and is fillet welded both inside and outside (on the bore and on the back face). A slip‑on pipe flange manufactured according to DIN 86033 from CuNi10Fe1.6Mn (C70600), used for joining copper‑nickel seawater piping systems in shipbuilding, offshore, and desalination plants.

Flange Facing and Gasket

  • Facing: DIN 86033 flanges typically have a Type B or E raised face (similar to EN 1092-1). Standard RF height is ~2 mm.

  • Gasket Material: Use soft gaskets compatible with seawater and CuNi (e.g., EPDM, PTFE, Neoprene, or Non-asbestos fiber).

  • Avoid: Graphite or rubber with high sulfur content (can corrode CuNi).

 

 

Repair & Re‑use of CuNi Flanges

Can a used CuNi flange be reused? Yes, under strict conditions.

Inspection before re‑use:

  • No cracks (dye penetrant).

  • Flatness of face ≤0.2 mm across the diameter.

  • Bolt holes not elongated (roundness within 0.5 mm).

  • No pitting deeper than 0.5 mm on gasket sealing area.

If minor pitting: Machine the face lightly (remove max 0.5 mm thickness). Re‑face to original surface roughness (Ra 3.2–6.3 µm). Note: Reducing flange thickness lowers pressure rating – recalculate for PN rating.

If corrosion near bore: Weld build‑up with ERCuNi, then machine back to dimensions. This is expensive but possible for large, rare flanges.

Do NOT re‑use: Flanges that have been overheated (>300°C) – grain growth reduces strength.

  • Naval & Commercial Marine: Seawater cooling lines, ballast systems, firefighting mains.

  • Offshore Platforms: Hydraulic lines, seawater lift pumps.

  • Desalination Plants: Low-pressure brine and seawater piping.

  • Power Plants: Once-through seawater cooling (e.g., coastal nuclear or fossil plants).
