Air cooler is a type of heat exchanger that cools hot process streams using ambient air, with no water required.

Forced draft (fan mounted at the bottom): Air is forced through the tube bundle. Advantages: Easy access to the fan for maintenance. Disadvantages: Hot air recirculation may occur.
Induced draft (fan mounted at the top): Air is drawn through the tube bundle. Advantages: More uniform airflow distribution across the bundle cross-section and better hot air discharge. Disadvantages: The fan operates at higher air temperatures, requiring heat-resistant materials.
In accordance with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, for equipment exposed to sour service (H₂S partial pressure ≥ 0.05 psi with free water present), materials for tubes, headers and tube sheets shall resist sulfide stress cracking (SSCC) and hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). This is critical for reactor effluent air coolers (REAC) in hydrotreating units. Yuhong Group provides documentation certifying HIC tests performed in line with ASTM G39 / NACE TM0284.
For rainy and snowy regions (maritime climate, Far East, Western Siberia), L-type fins with galvanic protection or extruded fins are recommended. Extruded fins fully cover the base tube with aluminum and prevent corrosion at the fin root. G-type fins are a cost-effective choice for dry desert areas.
API 661 does not specify a fixed corrosion allowance. The customer shall determine it according to the corrosiveness of process media. For reference: a corrosion allowance of 3.0 mm is required for streams in crude distillation units with chloride content over 50 ppm. For non-corrosive media, the standard allowance is 1.5 mm (1/16 inch). Yuhong Group performs wall thickness calculations in compliance with ASME standards based on the customer-specified corrosion allowance.
It is recommended to install temperature sensors at the inlet and outlet of the unit. A drop of 20% or more in the heat transfer coefficient indicates fouling on the outer fin surfaces. Cleaning can be carried out by high-pressure water washing (up to 50 bar) with special detergents, steam cleaning or mechanical brushing.
