ASME SA179 is a standard specification for seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes specifically manufactured for use in heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. These tubes are produced through a cold-drawing process to achieve precise dimensional tolerances, a smooth surface finish, and uniform mechanical properties. The low-carbon steel composition ensures excellent ductility, good thermal conductivity, and ease of fabrication, such as bending and expanding. ASME SA179 tubes are widely used in industrial applications requiring reliable performance under moderate temperature and pressure conditions, and they must comply with the mechanical and chemical requirements outlined in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II.

3. Features

  • Advantages: Excellent thermal conductivity for efficient heat transfer

                           Good tensile strength and ductility

                           Cost-effective compared to high-alloy steels

  • Limitations: Moderate corrosion resistance; requires coatings in aggressive environments

                          Not suitable for highly acidic or alkaline mediums

  • Common Surface Treatments: Anti-corrosion coatings, galvanizing, or pickling to enhance durability


4. Processing and Usage Precautions

  • Weldability: Its low carbon content (≤ 0.18% C) gives it good weldability. All welding should be completed before the final austenitizing heat treatment.
  • Expansion Joints and Tube-Sheet Connections: The expansion joint process is crucial for connecting heat exchanger tubes to the tube sheet. The low hardness of SA179 ensures that cracking is not easily caused during expansion. For shell-and-tube heat exchangers, a combination of welding and expansion joints is typically used to ensure sealing and alleviate thermal stress.
  • Low-Temperature Scenarios: The SA179 standard does not mandate low-temperature impact testing. Its design focuses on heat exchange scenarios at room temperature and medium temperature (approximately -29°C to 400°C). If the project requires operation in deep cryogenic environments, the ASTM A370 impact test clause must be added to the purchase order, specifying the test temperature and acceptance values.
  • Equivalent Materials: ASME SA179 steel tubes can be replaced with GB/T 3087 10# steel, but attention must be paid to differences in manufacturing processes and dimensional tolerance matching.
