ASME B16.9 Buttweld Pipe Fitting ASTM A234 WP22 CL1 / CL3 180 Degree Alloy Steel Elbow
A factory-made, 180-degree return bend (U-bend) pipe fitting manufactured from 2.25% chromium – 1% molybdenum alloy steel per ASTM A234 Grade WP22, supplied in either Class 1 (standard heat treatment) or Class 3 (impact tested) condition, with butt-weld end connections conforming to ASME B16.9, and finished with a temporary black shop primer coating for corrosion protection during transit and storage.
Why 180° elbow? To save space vs. two 90° elbows + straight pipe. Also lower pressure drop than a cast return bend.

Coating: Black Painted
Purpose: Temporary in-transit corrosion protection. It is NOT a final corrosion barrier.
Why Paint? WP22 alloy steel will rust if exposed to moisture. The black paint (usually an alkyd or epoxy shop primer) protects during storage and shipping.
Crucial Instruction: You must remove the black paint from the weld bevel and 1-2 inches of the adjacent pipe surface before welding. Painting on Cr-Mo steel can cause hydrogen cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) if not removed.
Final Coating: After welding and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), the elbow will likely require high-temperature paint or insulation.
