ASTM A312 TP316L (UNS S31603) Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe for Petrochemical
ASTM A312 TP316L (UNS S31603) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel seamless pipe designed for high corrosion resistance and high-temperature service in petrochemical, chemical processing, oil & gas, and other demanding industries. It offers superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to standard 316 stainless steel due to its reduced carbon content (≤0.03%), minimizing carbide precipitation during welding and thermal cycling.

Yield Strength | ≥170 MPa |
Elongation | ≥40% |
Hardness | ≤217 HB (Brinell) |
2. Key Adventages
Resistant to chlorides & acids: Molybdenum (2-3%) enhances resistance to chlorides, seawater, sulfuric/phosphoric acids, ideal for marine/chemical industries.
Low-carbon anti-sensitization: Carbon ≤0.03% prevents intergranular corrosion during welding/thermal cycles.
High-temperature stability: Continuous service up to 925°C (intermittent 870°C), suitable for heat exchangers/boilers.
Seamless design: No welded joints, higher pressure tolerance (ASME B31.3 compliant).
No post-weld treatment: Low carbon minimizes carbide precipitation, enabling direct welding.
Easy fabrication: Austenitic structure allows cold bending/flaring.
3. Key Applications
Refinery piping systems: Transporting crude oil, refined products, and corrosive media (e.g., sulfides, acidic gases).
Heat exchangers & reactors: High-temperature/pressure heat transfer components.
Catalytic cracking units: Resistant to high-temperature sulfur corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.
Acid/alkali transfer pipelines: For sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids.
Solvent production equipment: Resistant to organic solvents (e.g., methanol, ethanol).
Polymer production: Resists chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
Subsea pipelines: Resistant to seawater corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).
LNG equipment: Maintains toughness in cryogenic conditions (-196°C).
Offshore platform components: Load-bearing parts in high-salinity environments.
Sanitary piping: Contamination-free transfer of high-purity fluids (FDA compliant).
Bioreactors: 316L material withstands clean-in-place/sterilize-in-place (CIP/SIP).
Comparison Item | TP316L (UNS S31603) | TP316 (UNS S31600) |
Carbon Content |
≤0.03% (Ultra-low carbon, superior intergranular corrosion resistance after welding) |
≤0.08% (Standard carbon content, may sensitize after welding/high temperatures) |
Corrosion Resistance |
Excellent (Low carbon minimizes carbide precipitation, superior pitting/crevice corrosion resistance) |
Good (But may lose corrosion resistance due to carbide precipitation in harsh conditions) |
Weldability | No post-weld annealing required (Cost-effective for welded structures) |
May require post-weld heat treatment (To prevent intergranular corrosion) |
High-Temp Performance |
Suitable for continuous service up to 925°C (Reduced chromium carbide formation) |
Suitable for ≤870°C (Long-term high temp may cause weakening) |
Mechanical Strength | Tensile: ≥485 MPa, Yield: ≥170 MPa (Slightly lower than TP316) | Tensile: ≥515 MPa, Yield: ≥205 MPa (Higher strength) |
Primary Applications |
Chemical/offshore/nuclear (Harsh corrosive environments) |
General industry/food processing (Moderate conditions) |
Cost |
Slightly higher (Due to low-carbon control process) |
Slightly more economical (Standard composition) |
