  • Excellent Overall Performance: TP304 is the "benchmark" austenitic stainless steel grade, offering the best balance between formability, durability, and cost. Its key Nickel (Ni) content (~8-10.5%) ensures an austenitic structure at both room and cryogenic temperatures, resulting in superior toughness and strength.
  • Corrosion Resistance Mechanism: TP304 contains a minimum of 18% Chromium (Cr). Upon exposure to oxygen, Chromium forms an ultra-thin (only 2-5 nanometers) but incredibly dense and adherent chromium oxide passive layer on the surface. This layer effectively isolates the steel substrate from corrosive media and is self-healing in the presence of oxygen, even after mechanical damage.

  • Key Difference from 316: The higher-grade TP316 stainless steel adds 2-3% Molybdenum (Mo). Molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Therefore, TP304 is the most cost-effective choice for applications with very low chloride ion content; for environments involving seawater, high halides, or strong oxidizing salts, an upgrade to TP316 is recommended.
