EN 1092-1 is a European standard, officially titled "Flanges and their connections – Circular flanges for pipes, valves, fittings and accessories, PN designation. Part 1: Steel flanges". It specifies the dimensions, materials, tolerances, pressure-temperature ratings, marking, and testing requirements for steel flanges. F316L is the material designation specified in EN 1092-1. It directly corresponds to a specific stainless steel grade.

The "L" in F316L stands for "Low Carbon," with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. This gives it excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, making it particularly suitable for applications where post-weld heat treatment is not possible. Furthermore, the addition of molybdenum significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to common 304/304L stainless steel, improving its resistance to chloride media and marine atmospheric corrosion. It also possesses good mechanical properties and machinability, making it easy to form and weld.

Flange Types and Sealing Surface Forms

1. Types: Plate welding flange (PL), weld neck flange (SO), weld neck flange (WN), blind flange (BL), etc.
2. Sealing surfaces (commonly used): 

• Flat face (FF): Full flat surface, usually used with flat gaskets.
• Raised face (RF): Most commonly used, a raised annular face that forms a tight seal with a corresponding concave gasket (such as a spiral wound gasket).
• Ring joint face (RTJ): With annular grooves, used for metal ring gaskets, suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications.
