ASTM A270 TP304 Stainless Steel Seamless Sanitary Tubing for Food Indusrty

ASTM A270 is the standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing. It covers tubing used in hygienic applications (food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical) where cleanability and corrosion resistance are critical. There are two main finish categories:

Mechanically Polished – ID (inner diameter) is mechanically polished to a smooth, bright finish. Common Ra (roughness average) values: 20 μin (0.5 μm) or 15 μin (0.38 μm).
Electropolished – After mechanical polishing, an electrochemical process removes a thin layer, further smoothing the surface and improving corrosion resistance. Often required for ultra-hygienic or pharmaceutical applications.

Typical finishes offered:

180 grit – standard dairy finish
240 grit – smoother, easier cleaning
320 grit / electropolish – for demanding CIP/SIP systems

What the difference between sanitary tube and normal tube?

Sanitary tube is designed for easy cleaning and bacteria‑free operation – the smooth inner surface and tight tolerances allow it to meet FDA and 3‑A sanitary standards.
Normal tube is made for strength, pressure, or structural use, but without the surface finish or cleanliness required for hygienic applications.

If you are supplying for the dairy industry, ASTM A270 sanitary tube with a polished ID is the correct product. Using “normal” tube (even if 304 stainless) would risk product contamination, difficult cleaning, and non‑compliance with food safety regulations.
