A Feed Effluent Exchanger (often referred to as a Combined Feed Effluent Exchanger or CFEE) is a critical high-pressure TEMA heat exchanger widely utilized in hydroprocessing units, hydrocrackers, catalytic reformers, and hydrotreating systems.
Its primary thermal objective is heat recovery: exchanging thermal energy between the hot reaction effluent coming out of the reactor and the cold incoming feed mixture. By preheating the reactor feed using waste heat from the effluent stream, the system significantly cuts furnace duty, reduces operational fuel consumption, and lowers global carbon emissions.
Due to extreme operating conditions involving high hydrogen partial pressure, elevated temperatures, and corrosive hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), these exchangers require uncompromising standards in metallurgical selection, welding integrity, and precision component engineering.
Whether you are retrofitting an existing hydroprocessing loop or constructing a new processing unit, Yuhong Group supplies both full-scale equipment and direct replacement parts:
TEMA Configurations: High-pressure shell and tube designs compliant with TEMA (Type BHE, DEU, EMU, etc.) and ASME Section VIII Div. 1 & Div. 2.
Extreme Duty Seals: Breech-lock closures, diaphragm seals, and specialized bolted flange designs engineered for high-pressure hydrogen service.
A heat exchanger is only as reliable as its internal heat transfer tubing. We manufacture and integrate premium-grade seamless and welded tubing:
Stainless Steel Seamless Tube: Austenitic (304L, 316L, 321H, 347H) and Duplex/Super Duplex grades (S31803, S32750) providing exceptional resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking and wet H₂S corrosion.
Nickel Alloy Tube: Inconel 600/625, Incoloy 800/825, Hastelloy C276, and Monel 400 for severe high-temperature, high-pressure hydrogen, and acid-gas atmospheres.
Copper Alloy Tube: Admirality brass, CuNi 90/10, and CuNi 70/30 tubes engineered for cooling water circuits and non-corrosive process streams.
Fin Tube: Extruded, high-fin, low-fin, and serrated Fin Tube configurations designed to expand external surface area, boost heat transfer coefficients, and maximize thermal efficiency in air-cooled and gas-phase heat exchangers.
Furnace Tube & Heat Exchanger Tube: Premium seamless tubes engineered for severe thermal cycling, creep resistance, and high-pressure furnace or reboiler loops.
To assist maintenance teams, EPC contractors, and procurement specialists searching for replacement parts, the following table highlights key internal components, their engineering functions, and material offerings:
| Component Name | Key Technical Function | Engineering Material Options |
|---|---|---|
| Heat Exchanger Tube Bundle | The core thermal core of the exchanger; transfers heat between process fluids while maintaining complete fluid separation. | Stainless Steel Seamless Tube, Nickel Alloy Tube, Copper Alloy Tube, Fin Tube |
| Heat Exchanger Tubesheet | Heavy-forged structural disk that anchors heat exchanger tubes, withstands differential pressure, and isolates shell-side and tube-side fluids. | Forged Carbon Steel, Clad Steel (SA266 + SS316L/Incoloy 825), Monel, Stainless Steel |
| Baffles & Support Plates | Directs fluid flow across the tube bundle to maximize turbulence and heat transfer while preventing flow-induced tube vibration. | Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel (304L/316L), Duplex Stainless Steel |
| Channel & Shell Heads | Pressure-retaining end enclosures (Hemispherical, Ellipsoidal, or Breech-lock) designed for high-pressure inspection and maintenance access. | Heavy Wall Carbon Steel (SA516 Gr 70), Alloy Steel (SA387 Gr 11/22), Stainless Steel |
| Gaskets & Sealing Rings | Ensures leak-free sealing under extreme thermal cycling and high hydrogen partial pressures. | Octagonal/Oval Ring Joints (RTJ), Spiral Wound Gaskets, Solid Metal Diaphragms |
Superior Thermal Efficiency: Engineered tube layouts and optimized baffle pitch ensure maximum heat recovery coefficient with minimum pressure drop.
Resistance to High-Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA): Strict material controls adhering to Nelson Curve guidelines (API 941) to eliminate hydrogen embrittlement risks.
Precision CNC Tubesheet Machining: Ultra-precise hole drilling and grooving ensure optimum tube expansion, preventing micro-leakage in critical high-pressure joints.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): 100% Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Hydrostatic Pressure Testing, and Positive Material Identification (PMI) conducted on all pressure-retaining components.
When selecting or replacing a Combined Feed Effluent Exchanger (CFEE) or purchasing spare Heat Exchanger Tube Bundles, engineers and procurement officers should evaluate several critical operational factors:
In hydrotreaters, ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) combine to form ammonium bisulfide (NH₄HS) salts as temperatures drop in the effluent train.
Engineering Note: Proper temperature profiling and wash-water injection points must be incorporated to prevent salt crystallization, severe localized under-deposit corrosion, and tube plugging. Using high-alloy Nickel Alloy Tube or Duplex Stainless Steel Seamless Tube in the condensation zone drastically extends equipment service life.
Feed Effluent Exchangers undergo severe thermal expansion differential between the high-temperature feed and cooler effluent streams.
Engineering Note: Hydraulic tube expansion combined with strength welding is highly recommended over mechanical expansion alone. Premium heat exchanger tubesheet clad materials ensure structural stability and zero fluid cross-contamination.
High shell-side fluid velocities can trigger flow-induced vibration, leading to premature tube fretting or fatigue failure at the baffle contact points.
Engineering Note: Advanced CFD modeling and rod-baffle or twisted-tape tube supports are applied to eliminate vibration failure modes.
Integrated Fabrication: From raw seamless steel pipe manufacturing to final heavy pressure vessel assembly, we control every step of the supply chain.
Global Compliance: Built in accordance with ASME, TEMA, PED, and ISO international standards.
Custom Fabrication: Full customization based on client thermal datasheets, drawings, or replacement specs.
