ASTM A790 S31803 Duplex 2205 Welded Pipe For Corrosive Service
ASTM A790 S31803 Duplex 2205 Welded Stainless Steel Pipe
Product Overview
ASTM A790 S31803 Duplex 2205 Welded Stainless Steel Pipe is a ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel pipe designed for corrosive process piping and demanding industrial service. Manufactured from UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel, it combines high mechanical strength with good resistance to general corrosion and chloride-containing environments.
The welded construction is suitable for applications requiring controlled longitudinal weld quality, customized pipe dimensions and larger outside diameters. The pipe can be supplied with solution annealing, pickling, dimensional inspection and project-specific testing according to applicable ASTM A790/A790M and purchase order requirements.
Duplex 2205 S31803 is widely considered for oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, marine, power generation and industrial water systems where conventional stainless steel or carbon steel may not provide the required combination of strength and corrosion resistance.

Material: UNS S31803 Duplex 2205
UNS S31803 is a duplex stainless steel grade commonly identified with the Duplex 2205 family. Its ferritic-austenitic microstructure provides a balance of strength and corrosion resistance that differs from conventional austenitic grades such as 304L and 316L.
The alloying system containing chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen contributes to its resistance to chloride-containing environments and stress corrosion cracking. S31803 is therefore frequently selected for process piping where both mechanical strength and corrosion resistance are important design considerations.
Product Features
  • Duplex Ferritic-Austenitic Structure: The duplex microstructure provides a combination of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance for demanding industrial piping systems.
  • Good Chloride Corrosion Resistance: S31803 Duplex 2205 is commonly selected for piping exposed to chloride-containing fluids and other corrosive process environments.
  • Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking: Duplex stainless steel offers improved resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking compared with many conventional austenitic stainless steel grades.
  • High Mechanical Strength: The mechanical strength of Duplex 2205 is higher than that of many conventional austenitic stainless steels, making it suitable for pressure piping and process systems where strength is an important consideration.
  • Controlled Welded Construction: Automatic longitudinal welding provides a controlled weld seam and allows production of larger pipe diameters and customized wall thicknesses.
  • Customizable Supply: Pipe outside diameter, wall thickness, length, end preparation, surface condition, inspection and documentation can be supplied according to project requirements.
Manufacturing Process
The typical production process for ASTM A790 S31803 welded pipe includes:
  1. Duplex stainless steel plate or strip preparation
  2. Raw material identification and chemical verification
  3. Plate or strip forming
  4. Controlled longitudinal welding
  5. Weld seam inspection
  6. Solution heat treatment
  7. Pickling and surface treatment
  8. Cutting to specified length
  9. End preparation
  10. Dimensional inspection
  11. Hydrostatic or applicable nondestructive testing
  12. PMI and final inspection
  13. Marking and export packaging
The actual production route and testing scope are controlled according to the applicable standard, purchase specification and agreed inspection plan.
Applications
  • Oil & Gas: Used in selected process, production and utility piping systems where corrosive fluids and chloride-containing environments may be encountered.
  • Petrochemical Plants: Suitable for process piping in refineries and petrochemical facilities requiring duplex stainless steel construction.
  • Chemical Processing: Applied to selected chemical process lines where corrosion resistance and mechanical strength are required.
  • Marine & Seawater Systems: Considered for marine piping, cooling-water systems and selected seawater-related applications, subject to actual service conditions.
  • Power Generation: Used in selected cooling water, process water and auxiliary piping systems in power plants.
  • Industrial Process Piping: Suitable for industrial fluid transportation systems requiring a combination of strength, corrosion resistance and welded pipe construction.
Typical Service Media
  • Chloride-containing process fluids
  • Industrial cooling water
  • Brackish water
  • Selected seawater-related services
  • Hydrocarbon process streams
  • Chemical process fluids
  • Industrial water
  • Corrosive process media
Note: Material suitability should be evaluated according to the actual medium, chloride concentration, temperature, flow velocity and operating conditions.
ASTM A790 S31803 Welded Pipe vs. Seamless Pipe
ASTM A790 covers both seamless and straight-seam welded duplex stainless steel pipe. Welded pipe is produced by forming plate or strip and creating a controlled longitudinal weld. It can be advantageous for larger outside diameters and certain customized dimensions. Seamless pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal weld and may be selected for specific pressure, size or project requirements. The choice between welded and seamless construction should be based on pipe dimensions, service conditions, design requirements and the applicable project specification.
S31803 vs. S32205 Duplex 2205
Item S31803 S32205
