Yuhong Group Co., Ltd. manufactures sanitary-grade hairpin heat exchangers in 304L and 316L stainless steel with a double tubesheet configuration, intended for clean process duties where product integrity and cleanability are governing selection criteria rather than heat transfer alone. The hairpin geometry places product on the tube side in a true counter-current arrangement, which suits viscous, particulate-bearing, or thermally sensitive streams that are difficult to handle in baffled shell-side passages. The double tubesheet is the defining safety feature: two independent tubesheets at each end create a vented air gap, so a tube-to-tubesheet joint failure releases to atmosphere rather than allowing product and utility to mix. In clean-process service, this configuration is typically specified where the utility side cannot be permitted to enter the product stream under any credible failure mode, and where drainability, surface finish, and CIP/SIP compatibility must be demonstrated rather than assumed.
| Element | Design logic | Consequence for the clean process |
|---|---|---|
| Two tubesheets per end | Product-side and utility-side tubesheets are physically separated | A failed joint leaks to the vented gap, not into the opposing fluid |
| Vented air gap | Open to atmosphere between the two tubesheets | Leakage is visually detectable or sensor-detectable before cross-contamination occurs |
| Hairpin tube geometry | Tubes bent through a U-return, product on tube side | True counter-current flow; tube side is mechanically cleanable and fully drainable |
| Removable or welded bundle | Bundle configuration selected against cleaning and validation requirements | Removable versions permit inspection; welded versions reduce gasket exposure in critical duty |
The double tubesheet adds length and tubesheet faces to be polished, and that is a deliberate cost against the consequence of utility ingress into a product stream. It is not a default that every clean-process line needs; it is specified where the utility fluid is not acceptable as a product contaminant and where a leak must be detectable rather than silent.
| Grade | Specification | Surface finish (product side) | Typical clean-process condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304L (UNS S30403) | Seamless or welded sanitary tube, compliant with ASME BPE material requirements | Mechanically polished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm or better; electropolished on request | General food, dairy, and beverage duty where chloride exposure is controlled |
| 316L (UNS S31603) | Seamless or welded sanitary tube, compliant with ASME BPE material requirements | Ra ≤ 0.5 µm (20 µin) as a common high-purity target; Ra ≤ 0.38 µm or 0.25 µm available by electropolish | Pharmaceutical, biotech, WFI, and chloride-bearing clean service where pitting resistance governs |
| Grade | Specification | Surface requirement | Service logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304L | ASME BPE-compliant plate or forging | Product-side face polished to match tube finish; utility-side face may be left at a lower finish | Food and dairy duty with potable or non-hazardous utility |
| 316L | ASME BPE-compliant plate or forging | Both product-side tubesheet faces polished; double-tubesheet geometry means four faces per straight unit equivalent | Pharmaceutical, WFI, and aseptic duty where both tubesheet faces are product-contact or validated surfaces |
| Grade | Specification | Surface treatment | Typical condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304L | ASME Section VIII Div. 1 or ASME BPE-compliant shell material | External polished or satin finish; internal utility-side finish per specification | Clean utility service; shell side does not contact product |
| 316L | ASME Section VIII Div. 1 or ASME BPE-compliant shell material | As above | Corrosive utility or wash-down environment |
| Material | Compliance | Temperature / chemical note | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| PTFE | FDA-compliant grade | Broad chemical resistance; suitable for SIP cycling within gasket rating | Product-side and utility-side closures in aseptic and WFI duty |
| EPDM | FDA-compliant grade | Good for caustic and acid CIP chemistry within the stated temperature window | Food and dairy duty where SIP temperatures are moderate |
| Silicone | FDA-compliant grade | Limited to lower-temperature clean service | Selected where gasket flexibility and steam resistance are balanced against lower temperature ceiling |
| Parameter | Standard / typical range | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Hairpin (U-tube return), single-pass or multi-pass tube side | True counter-current flow; removable or welded bundle options |
| Tubesheet arrangement | Double tubesheet with vented air gap at each end | ASME BPE double-tubesheet design criteria for cross-contamination prevention |
| Design standard | ASME BPE for product-contact and hygienic requirements; TEMA mechanical basis for the pressure boundary | BPE governs finish, cleanability, and documentation; TEMA governs bundle mechanical integrity |
| Surface finish, product side | Ra ≤ 0.8 µm for general food-grade; Ra ≤ 0.5 µm for high-purity; Ra ≤ 0.25 µm electropolished for stringent biotech | Finish selected against the cleaning validation target, not a single catalogue value |
| Surface finish, utility side | Commonly Ra ≤ 1.6 µm or mill finish, unless the utility side is also product-contact in a shared-media scenario | Cost and cleanability balance where utility side is not product-contact |
| Design temperature | Typically up to 150°C for standard elastomer-seated units; higher with PTFE or welded closures, confirmed by calculation | Gasket and material limits checked against SIP cycles and design pressure |
| Design pressure | Project-specific; confirmed by pressure-boundary calculation for the selected material and thickness | ASME BPE / TEMA mechanical review |
| Connections | Tri-clamp (1.5–4 in), DIN 11851, SMS, or ASME BPE hygienic fittings | Plant standard and drainability requirement drive the selection |
| Drainability | Low-point drain and high-point vent on the product side; slope and orientation shown on the drawing | A unit that holds product in the head after CIP is not sanitary regardless of surface finish |
| CIP/SIP compatibility | Full product-channel coverage; caustic/acid CIP at specified velocity; SIP cycle temperature and duration to be confirmed against gasket and material rating | Validated against the cleaning and sanitisation programme, not assumed from finish alone |
The product-contact boundary is fabricated to ASME BPE, with the pressure boundary reviewed against TEMA mechanical requirements. Documentation and examination scope:
Material certification: mill certificates traceable to each product-contact tube, tubesheet, and wetted fitting, with 304L or 316L grade confirmed against the purchase specification.
Surface finish records: Ra measurements on product-side tube IDs and tubesheet faces, reported against the specified target (0.8 / 0.5 / 0.38 / 0.25 µm) rather than a single nominal value.
Weld examination: orbital GTAW welds on product-contact joints inspected visually and by borescope where specified; weld log and passivation record issued with the unit.
Leak and pressure testing: hydrostatic or pneumatic test of the pressure boundary; double-tubesheet vent gap checked for detectable leakage paths before shipment.
Cleanability verification: drainability check on the product side; riboflavin or equivalent coverage test available on request where the cleaning validation requires documented evidence.
Compliance documentation: ASME BPE compliance statement, FDA-compliant gasket certificates, and surface finish report supplied with the qualification package.
Exchanger body: foam-lined plywood case or iron-frame crate with the hairpin bundle supported to prevent bending stress at the U-return.
Product-contact openings: capped with clean, non-shedding covers; hygienic fittings protected against impact and particulate ingress.
Surface protection: product-side surfaces wrapped in clean polyethylene; no carbon steel contact on polished stainless surfaces.
Documentation: packing list, surface finish report, and material certificates packed in a document holder inside the case; shipping marks reference the purchase order and tag number.
Is the double tubesheet necessary for every clean-process hairpin duty?
No. A single tubesheet with seal-welded and polished tube joints is often sufficient where the utility is potable and a leak into the product would not create a safety or regulatory event.
The double tubesheet is specified where the utility fluid must be prevented from entering the product stream under any credible joint failure, and where a leak must be detectable rather than concealed.
In WFI and most aseptic pharmaceutical duty, the double tubesheet is treated as standard rather than optional.
What surface finish should be specified for food versus pharmaceutical duty?
General food-grade duty commonly targets Ra ≤ 0.8 µm on product-contact surfaces; Ra ≤ 0.5 µm is the usual high-purity pharmaceutical target; stringent biotech or WFI duty may require Ra ≤ 0.25 µm with electropolish.
The finish should be chosen against the cleaning validation target and the product’s soil-release behaviour, not against a single “sanitary” label.
The utility side can generally be left at a coarser finish unless it is also product-contact.
How does the hairpin geometry support CIP and SIP?
The product-side flow path is a straight tube with a U-return, with no baffled shell-side dead zones on the product side.
A low-point drain and high-point vent, together with the slope shown on the drawing, allow the product channel to drain after CIP.
SIP cycles heat and cool the unit; the gasket compound and tube wall are selected against the cycle temperature and chemistry, not just the steady-state design condition.
