ASME SA182 F316L Stainless Steel Forged Nozzle Flange is a pressure-retaining, circular metallic connector manufactured by hot mechanical deformation (forging) from low-carbon austenitic stainless steel (Grade 316L), conforming to the ASME SA-182 material specification. It is designed to be permanently welded (as a neck/nozzle) or bolted to the shell or head of a pressure vessel, providing a standardized, leak-proof interface for attaching piping systems, instrumentation, or access openings, while withstanding internal pressure, external loads, and corrosive process media.

 

 

Key Advantages for Pressure Vessel Application

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: The 2-3% Molybdenum content provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides, acids (sulfuric, acetic), and seawater environments.

  • High Weldability: The low carbon content (0.03% max) prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding (sensitization), eliminating the need for post-weld annealing in most thin sections.

  • Low-Temperature Toughness: Maintains excellent impact properties even at cryogenic temperatures (-196°C / -320°F).

  • Resistance to Oxidation: Operates reliably up to approximately 870°C (1600°F) in intermittent service.

Never directly bolt an EN 1092-1 flange to an ASME B16.5 flange. Bolt circle diameters, hole sizes, and facing dimensions are different. Use a proper adapter flange or a custom-made transition piece designed to both standards.

Inspection & Non-Destructive Examination (NDE)

Per ASME SA182 and customer specifications, the following tests are mandatory or optional:

  • PMI (Positive Material Identification) – to verify chemical composition (XRF).

  • Hydrostatic Test – to confirm pressure integrity (usually performed on the final welded vessel, but flange forging is tested for soundness).

  • Ultrasonic Test (UT) – for detecting internal laminations or voids (per SA-388).

  • Liquid Penetrant Examination (PT) – for detecting surface defects on the machined flange faces and hub.

  • Dimensional Check – verifying bolt circle, diameter, thickness, hub angle, and concentricity.
