Product Introduction of ASTM A335 P9 Base Tube + CS Studded Fin Tube

Studded fin tubes (also known as studded tubes, pin tubes, or nail-head fin tubes) are high-performance extended-surface heat transfer components. They consist of a seamless base tube with solid cylindrical metal studs (nail heads) resistance-welded onto the outer surface in precise rows or patterns.

Our ASTM A335 P9 alloy steel studded fin tubes with carbon steel (CS) studs are specifically engineered for high-temperature, high-pressure, and severe fouling environments. The combination of a chrome-molybdenum alloy base tube and durable carbon steel studs delivers excellent heat transfer efficiency (surface area increased 2–3 times compared to bare tubes), superior mechanical strength, and outstanding resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and thermal cycling.

These tubes are ideal for applications where conventional finned tubes may fail due to fouling, erosion, or aggressive flue gases.

Structure of ASTM A335 P9 Studded Fin Tube (Base Tube, Studs & Welding Process)

  • Base Tube: Seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe manufactured to ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 Grade P9.
  • Studs (Fins): Solid cylindrical carbon steel pins (typically Q235B or equivalent CS grade) arranged in square, hexagonal, or staggered patterns.
  • Manufacturing Process: Automated electrical resistance welding (ERW / resistance stud welding). An electric current generates localized heat at the stud-to-tube interface, forging a full metallurgical bond without filler metal. Key process controls include weld penetration ≥1.5 mm, root protrusion ≤1 mm, and minimal heat-affected zone to preserve base tube integrity.

The resulting structure provides high rigidity, turbulence promotion for enhanced gas-side heat transfer, and easy mechanical cleaning capability.

Performance Advantages of ASTM A335 P9 Studded Fin Tube with CS Studs

  • Heat transfer surface area increased 2–3 times versus bare tubes, significantly improving gas-side heat transfer coefficient.
  • Excellent resistance to fouling, abrasion, and erosion from dirty or particulate-laden flue gases.
  • High mechanical strength and rigidity allow frequent aggressive cleaning (e.g., high-pressure water or shot blasting) without damage.
  • Superior high-temperature performance (suitable up to approximately 550–600°C depending on service conditions) with good oxidation and sulfidation resistance from the P9 alloy base.
  • Strong metallurgical bond between studs and tube ensures long service life under thermal cycling and vibration.
  • Lower pressure drop compared with dense continuous fin designs in certain configurations while maintaining high efficiency.

Detailed Application Fields of ASTM A335 P9 + CS Studded Fin Tubes

  • Petrochemical and refinery fired heaters (convection sections, crude heaters, process heaters)
  • Waste heat recovery units (WHRU) and economizers
  • Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers and biomass boilers
  • Power plant boilers, superheaters, and air preheaters
  • Chemical process heaters and reactors
  • Incinerators and waste-to-energy plants
  • Steel plant and other high-temperature industrial furnaces

These tubes are preferred where flue gas is corrosive, abrasive, or heavily fouling.
